October 30, 2012 A Tribute to the ‘Milk Man’ of India…

This day will always be remembered as one of the saddest day in the history of India. With the departure of Dr. Verghese Kurien, a glorious chapter of ‘White Revolution’ has come to an end. He will be dearly missed as a wonderful person.

Dr. Kurien was phenomenal in guiding rural India to prosperity. By creating Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), he brought farmers, animal rearers and women together under one roof where they could sell their product and employ their services. Today this federation has a turnover of more than 12,000 crore. In the brand name ‘Amul’, Dr. Kurien gave India and its people a universal identity which has been going strong since its inception.

What Dr. Kurien did was bring Anand, and alongwith it Gujarat, on the world map. He worked untiringly without any hype or advertisement whatsoever. His real ‘marketing’ was the involvement and respect of the people. He never needed to show the world what he wanted to do because his work did that for him. He strengthened the union of millions of cowheards, cattle-rearers and rural citizens for a better milk distribution. National Dairy Development Bank as well as various other co-operative milk federations across the nation were established under his guidance. He gave Gujarat Indian Institute of Rural Management. Various schemes to connect rural India with technology were his brain-child.

But it is a matter of utmost shame that Dr. Kurien had to face humiliation at the dusk of his life. Dr. Kurien had to face the dirty politics and humiliation because of the current governance of Gujarat. He had to witness the disrespect and finally was forced to leave the milk federation he himself had set-up. However, this humiliation could not let him down. His legacy has been too great to be down-trended by such incidents. I hope the people of Gujarat and its administrators always remember this great personality and keep doing the good work Dr. Kurien started.

Jai Hind!
